Gilroy Recycling Program Recycling is more important than ever before to citizens in the City of Gilroy. There is a pressing need to preserve our environment, save natural resources and reduce the amount of garbage going to landfills.

Acceptable Recycling Materials
Only place recyclable materials into your recycling container!
Please rinse food and beverage containers and crush plastics.
Aseptic containers
Aseptic containers are sterile cardboard containers, which are used to preserve food.
  • Milk cartons
  • Orange juice cartons
  • Fruit juice boxes

Glass
All glass food, beverage jars and bottles. Remove metal lids and place separately in bin.
  • Fruit juice
  • Mayonnaise jars
  • Spaghetti sauce jars

Metal
All metal food and beverage containers including those made of aluminum, tin, steel and bi-metal, including lids.
  • Rinsed food and beverage cans
    (soda, pet food, soup, and tuna cans)
  • Pots, pans, toasters
    (items must fit into the recycling cart)
Plastic
Containers marked #1 - #7
  • Detergent and shampoo containers
  • Milk and orange juice jugs
  • Polystyrene blocks
  • Polystyrene packing peanuts
    (must be in secured or tied in a clear plastic bag)

Paper
Most clean and dry household paper:
  • Cardboard
  • File folders
  • Food boxes (cereal, crackers, remove liners)
  • Junk mail & envelopes
  • Magazines & catalogs
  • Newspaper
  • Paper (colored, computer, white, wrapping)
  • Paper bags
  • Paper egg cartons
  • Paper towel rolls
  • Phone books
Cardboard
Cut up cardboard boxes and put them loose inside your blue cart. Please do not force boxes into the cart. Larger boxes that do not fit into your cart must be flattened and tied into bundles no larger than three feet by three feet in dimension. Place bundles of cardboard next to your recycling cart on your pick-up day. Drivers will not pick up loose piles of cardboard!

Recycle BatteriesHousehold Batteries
Put AAA - D, 9V, alkaline, rechargeable, and button cell batteries in a zippered plastic bag on top of your blue cart.

Do not put car batteries out to be collected.
See the Household Hazardous Waste page for information on where to dispose of old car batteries. The San Martin Transfer Station accepts car batteries at no charge.

Used Motor Oil & Oil Filters

Used Motor Oil To recycle motor oil and used oil filters, you must request one-gallon plastic containers with a screw top lid and special oil filter bags by contacting customer service.

You may place up to three one-gallon containers of used motor oil and three fully drained filters (in bags) next to your recycling cart on collection day.

Unacceptable Recycling Materials
Please do not place the following non-recyclable materials into your blue container!
Construction Debris
  • Concrete, rocks, dirt
Electronic / Universal Waste
  • Televisions, cell phones and computer monitors, fluorescent light bulbs or tubes.
    Contact us to find out how to recycle or safely dispose of these materials.
Household Hazardous Waste
  • Paints, solvents, motor oil, cleaners, corrosives, fuel tanks - propane tanks, syringes, medical waste
Unacceptable Glass, Metal, Paper and Plastic

Compost
  • Leaves, small branches, food scraps, food soiled paper, grass clippings

Service Schedule

Your recycling , yard waste and garbage is collected weekly. All containers need to be placed on the street, wheels against the curb, by 6:00 A.M. of your service day. Collection times may vary.

Your garbage, recycling, and yard waste cart will all be collected by an automated truck. This means a mechanical arm retrieves, empties, and sets the cart down in the street without the driver leaving the truck.
